| Update on HISD budget workshops: The January 28 budget workshop has been canceled. Workshop dates are now February 27, March 26, April 23, May 1, and May 22. Stay tuned so you can advocate during the budget cycle for budget decisions that are best for students! Update on state-level advocacy: The House and Senate have both released their budget proposals for the next biennium. The House proposes $4.5 billion for public education and the Senate proposes $5.3 billion for public education. (Both propose $1 billion for vouchers.) These amounts may seem large, but keep in mind that there are over 5.5 million public school students in Texas so this is less than $1000 per child. Check out this video that explains how Texas currently compares to other states in funding for public school students. (Spoiler alert: Texas spends $4000/student less than the national average and ranks in the bottom 10 states in the nation in per-student spending.) Stay tuned so you can advocate this legislative session for increased investment in our public schools! |
