| Coffee with the Principal: Q&A Session for Weapons Detection System |
We invite all our parents to our evening edition of Coffee with the Principal on Tuesday, March 4, 2024, at 5:30 PM, in the Teaching Theater. This session will include an informational presentation on our new Weapons Detection System, followed by a Q&A to address any questions or concerns. The system is designed to be non-intrusive, ensuring a smooth and efficient entry process. Unlike airport security, students will not need to remove shoes or belts, and regular bag searches will not be required. Our goal is to implement a safety measure that causes minimal disruption to students’ daily routines. Additionally, during our meeting, we'll share a draft of our proposed entry procedures. This will be a great opportunity to provide feedback and gain a clear understanding of what to expect. Parking will be available in the garage. Parent email from Friday, Feb. 28th. Here’s an overview of the timeline: - Friday, March 7: Share finalized entry procedures.
- Monday, March 17: Begin mock entry procedures.
- Wednesday, March 19: Equipment in place and students begin the new entry procedures

| Apologies for the incorrect information last week–although HISD typically streams all meetings on its YouTube channel, the February 27 budget workshop was not on YouTube. You can, however, watch it here. Slides from the workshop are available here. Highlights from the workshop include that enrollment has declined by 30,000 students in the last decade and there is a projected enrollment decline next year of an additional 8,000 students, as a result school closures will be considered for the 2026-27 school year, the administration plans to invest an additional $100M over the next two years from urgent security and health projects, and the district will maintain the number of NES schools for 2025-26 at 130 but will add a maximum of 5 new NES schools if any schools fall to an F accountability rating. HISD is also “cautious, yet optimistic” about additional funding from the state in the form of state allotment increases. The next budget workshop is March 26, 2025. There is also a regular board meeting on March 20, 2025. |

| Heights Public Library & Teen Advisory Club |
Heights Public Library is located down the street from Heights High School at 1302 Heights Blvd. They offer a variety of resources and services to all who hold library cards, as well as a hangout space for all. Fun fact - both teachers and students have access to their collection and online resources via a Learning Link Card. The login information for the cards is as follows: For students: Username: first letter of last name, followed by student ID number PIN: numbers for the month and day of birthday (ex. April 26 is 0426)
For teachers: Username: F + school ID PIN: birthday as well
The Teen Advisory Club will be kicking off in the fall of 2025. Membership in the club requires attendance at monthly meetings. Those who participate in the Club will learn more about library resources, post-graduation opportunities, share insights on how they would design a teen space at the library, and host their own program for their peers or for younger children. They will also receive service hours for their time. |

| German State Contest Winners! |
22 Heights students traveled and competed in the Texas State German Contest this weekend in San Marcos. They competed against German students from all over the state of Texas. Each Heights participant placed within the Top 10 in their events and Heights HS was 8th overall in the state. Two students really stood out: Senior Nadiyah Russell placed 1st in Vocabulary, 3rd in Spelling, 4th in Oral Presentation, and 5th in both Reading Comprehension and Grammar. She was also awarded Best Actress for her portrayal of the witch in the Level 4 (7-member) Skit, which also placed 3rd. Freshman Matilda Fox placed 3rd in Grammar and 4th in Spelling, and she was part of the 3rd place Level 2 (6-member) Skit. Shout outs to juniors, Diego Diaz, Owen Holoubek, and Hannah Schmieder for placing in the top 5 of their events. Freshman Finley Smith and sophomore Aldo Rodriguez also placed 4th with their Level 2 duet skit. If you know any of these students, please congratulate them. They all worked very hard. |
