Advocacy Update
Advocacy Update

State advocacy:  During the last legislative session two years ago, lawmakers left a multi-million dollar surplus on the table, passing a budget with no new funding for public schools.  Texas currently ranks 46th in the nation in per-student funding and has no mechanism for increasing funding to keep pace with inflation.  Raise Your Hand Texas and other organizations seek to rectify this situation by advocating for increased funding this legislative session.  Priorities include:  (1) increasing state funding for public school students and education programs, focusing on raising teacher pay.  (2) Implementing an automatic annual adjustment to the Basic Allotment—the foundation of per-student funding—to address inflation and our schools’ growing needs.  (3) Reinvesting state savings due to local school district property value growth into public schools.  Sign up for Raise Your Hand Texas newsletters and alerts to find out how to support these efforts.

HISD advocacy:  Did you miss the latest HISD Board of Managers budget meeting?  You can watch the meeting here.  And stay tuned as the next budget meeting on April 23 should address campus allocations–knowing how much funding your student’s campus will receive (or be cut) is critical.

Heights Public Library & Teen Advisory Club
Heights Public Library & Teen Advisory Club
Heights Public Library is located down the street from Heights High School at 1302 Heights Blvd. They offer a variety of resources and services to all who hold library cards, as well as a hangout space for all. Fun fact - both teachers and students have access to their collection and online resources via a Learning Link Card. The login information for the cards is as follows:
For students:
  • Username: first letter of last name, followed by student ID number
  • PIN: numbers for the month and day of birthday (ex. April 26 is 0426)
For teachers:
  • Username: F + school ID
  • PIN: birthday as well
The Teen Advisory Club will be kicking off in the fall of 2025. Membership in the club requires attendance at monthly meetings. Those who participate in the Club will learn more about library resources, post-graduation opportunities, share insights on how they would design a teen space at the library, and host their own program for their peers or for younger children. They will also receive service hours for their time.
Information about the Club can be found at this link: What is Teen Advisory Club? - Ask HPL
The registration form can be found directly at this link: HPL - Teen Advisory Club Application - Visit Us at Houston Public Library

Heights Public Library will be having a parent information session for Teen Advisory Club on May 3rd. More information can be found here: TAC – Improve Library Services for Teens! Information session - Reservations - Visit us
