Advocacy Update
Advocacy Update

Things are heating up in Austin regarding public school funding.  The House Committee on Public Education voted to move HB2, the school funding bill, out of committee.  This bill raises the “basic allotment,” the base per-pupil funding, from $6,160 to $6500.  It also restricts the use of uncertified teachers for foundation curriculum courses.  The committee also voted its voucher bill out of committee and removed a $1 billion cap, meaning that the program could cost $4.8 billion per year by 2030.

There have also been developments on accountability ratings.  Senator Bettencourt is sponsoring a bill that, among other things, would restrict school districts’ ability to challenge accountability ratings and eliminate the TEA’s ability to designate schools as “not rated” (this happened in HISD after Hurricane Harvey and statewide during the pandemic).  Superintendent Miles testified in favor of this bill.  In addition, last week the Fifteenth Court of Appeals ruled in a lawsuit brought by hundreds of school districts (not including HISD) that the 2023 accountability ratings can be released.  Those ratings had previously been enjoined due to a dispute about whether the TEA followed state law in making changes to the rating calculations.

You can read more about these developments here.

Heights Public Library & Teen Advisory Club
Heights Public Library & Teen Advisory Club
Heights Public Library is located down the street from Heights High School at 1302 Heights Blvd. They offer a variety of resources and services to all who hold library cards, as well as a hangout space for all. Fun fact - both teachers and students have access to their collection and online resources via a Learning Link Card. The login information for the cards is as follows:
For students:
  • Username: first letter of last name, followed by student ID number
  • PIN: numbers for the month and day of birthday (ex. April 26 is 0426)
For teachers:
  • Username: F + school ID
  • PIN: birthday as well
The Teen Advisory Club will be kicking off in the fall of 2025. Membership in the club requires attendance at monthly meetings. Those who participate in the Club will learn more about library resources, post-graduation opportunities, share insights on how they would design a teen space at the library, and host their own program for their peers or for younger children. They will also receive service hours for their time.
Information about the Club can be found at this link: What is Teen Advisory Club? - Ask HPL
The registration form can be found directly at this link: HPL - Teen Advisory Club Application - Visit Us at Houston Public Library

Heights Public Library will be having a parent information session for Teen Advisory Club on May 3rd. More information can be found here: TAC – Improve Library Services for Teens! Information session - Reservations - Visit us
